The Liverpool Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (LSPCC) was founded in 1882 by a Liverpool businessman, Thomas Frederick Agnew (1834 – 1924) .
In 1881 Agnew visited New York, he was impressed by the city's pioneering children's charity and returned to the UK determined to provide similar help for the children of Liverpool.
He enlisted the support of leading citizens to help establish the charity. Other towns and cities followed Liverpool’s example, leading to the foundation of the NSPCC. The LSPCC merged with the NSPCC at the start of 1954.
