The Hargreaves Centre in Liverpool is the NSPCC’s first customised safe haven for children.
The centre – which opened in June 2007 – offers a range of groundbreaking services to children and young people in one place.
In 2002 Merseyside police dealt with 19,500 cases of domestic violence, of which 6,176 were in Liverpool. Children are witnesses in nine out of ten cases of domestic violence in the UK.
NSPCC teams work with local children, young people and their families who have suffered from domestic violence .
Staff also work with pregnant substance users, women with young children and their families. 32 per cent of the registered drug users in Liverpool are women. Numerous studies have made the link between drug abuse and child abuse and neglect.
A new ChildLine base is housed in the building alongside There4me.com - an online information, support and advice service for 12 to 16 year olds.
The building is named after Matalan Chairman – John Hargreaves who launched the Safe Place Appeal in 2004 with a £6 million donation. Since then many young people, schools, individuals and organisations have supported the appeal.
Although the building is now complete significant running costs for the services still need to be raised for the NSPCC’s crucial work in Merseyside to continue. To fundraise or donate to the Safe Place Appeal, ring 0800 107 3790 or donate online .
