Services for children, young people and families

We run services for children, young people and their families throughout the UK, Guernsey and Jersey

Many of our listening services for young people did not exist before the  FULL STOP Campaign . They mean children can contact us directly rather than be referred through another agency.

ChildLine

Your support meant that we were able to continue providing all our existing services for children whilst joining with ChildLine. In 2006/07 11,505 called to talk about sexual abuse.

Schools

Since the launch of the FULL STOP campaign we have set up 14 teams, providing independent listening and counselling services to children, which one teacher described as “absolutely invaluable”.

There4me.com

There4me.com is a highly interactive website for young people aged 12-16 years offering information and advice on a broad range of issues that are important to this age group. There4me.com gives young people an alternative and secure means of gaining help when they most need it.

In excess of 7,000 young people have used the website to speak for the first time about the abuse they have suffered. Since it’s launch in 2001, There4me advisers have:

  • delivered over 100,000 individual 1-2-1 sessions
  • replied to over 40,000 Private In Box emails from young people
  • replied to over 22,000 Ask Sam letters from young people
  • moderated over 120,000 posts from young people on the Message Board.

Young people’s centres

Eight centres help to prevent abuse by giving young people a voice and involving them in the decisions that affect their lives. Counsellors are on hand if young people need to talk about their problems.Your support means we can do more than ever to prevent abuse from happening, to protect children and young people and to help them overcome it.

Domestic violence prevention

Twenty one teams help children and their families to address or overcome the destructive effects of domestic violence, restoring healthy relationships. A child who attended one of these projects told us: “Before I came here, I didn’t talk to anyone. Now I can talk and laugh.”

National Child Protection Helpline

In 2007/08, 95,531 calls were made to the NSPCC Child Protection Helpline, we answered 76,938 calls which is 80%. The service also now provides support in Welsh and five Asian languages.

Independent Enquiry and Assessment Service (IEAS)

The NSPCC is the only charity with the statutory power to undertake child abuse investigations and can be called upon by the police and local authorities to assist them.

Therapeutic services

Over 900 children and young people were helped by the NSPCC’s 34 therapeutic and treatment teams during the course of 2007/08.

Young Witness Support

Seven teams help to prepare children and young people for giving evidence and support them through the court process. One young girl wrote to us to say: “I’d like to thank my worker for making my nightmares go away.”
