Players of People's Postcode Lottery support Childline

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery are helping to support  the vital work of Childline counsellors.

Childline counsellors, like Sarah, give free and confidential counselling sessions to children and young people struggling with a range of issues, such as mental health and abuse. Thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery, around £30,000 a day will go towards Childline throughout March, helping counsellors deliver around 25,000 potentially life-changing sessions.

Sarah's story

Sarah, one of our Liverpool counsellors, shares the story of how she helped a young boy understand that the death of his mother wasn't his fault.

During one of her shifts, Sarah received a call from an 11 year old boy who said he felt guilty about his mother's death from an overdose the year before. Sarah spoke to him about his feelings and about how tough it must have been. She promised him that his mother’s death wasn’t his fault and reassured him that a Childline counsellor was there for him anytime he needed to talk. She felt the boy left the call feeling lighter and relieved.

Every day, counsellors like Sarah are there to listen to children's stories just like this. They listen to children and young people when no one else will. Talking to counsellors like Sarah can be the first step in getting their lives back on track.

Our trained counsellors are there for young people 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, no matter the issue.

Life-changing support

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have helped raise over £1 million for the NSPCC, with around £30,000 a day going towards paying for Childline during March.

Our Childline service is there to give young people a voice when no one else is listening. Whatever problems or dangers they’re facing, we’re a place for them to turn for support – any time of day or night.

Last year, Childline counsellors like Sarah were there to carry out almost 280,000 counselling sessions with children and young people. They were there to help them when they felt no one else would listen. And our Childline website received almost 3.2 million visits, giving information and advice to help young people overcome any worries they had.

The majority of our counselling sessions are now delivered online, with children and teenagers preferring to communicate via 1-2-1 chat, which takes longer and is more costly. This is why support from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery’s couldn’t come at a better time for the NSPCC service.
