Caring Dads: Safer Children Helping dads address violent behaviour
This service is no longer being delivered, but we have carried out an evaluation. On these pages you can find out how the service worked and what we've learnt.
We developed Caring Dads: Safer Children for fathers having difficulties in their family because of their abusive or violent behaviour.
Children can be deeply traumatised if they see violence between their parents or carers, even if they aren't physically harmed.
This service aimed to help dads:
- stop their abuse
- recognise the impact their behaviour has on their children
- improve their parenting.
How it worked
Fathers came to the NSPCC to work together in a discreet, supportive group. They would attend 17 sessions focusing on topics like:
- how your behaviour as a parent can be affected by your own childhood experiences of parenting
- what emotionally abusive, controlling or violent behaviour between parents feels like for a child
- what children need from their dads to improve and strengthen their relationship.
"I'd noticed my oldest child, who is 17, starting to behave the way I was – he thought it was acceptable."
