Children need to be back at the top of the agenda says Des Mannion, head of NSPCC Cymru/Wales
Today we're calling on the next Welsh government to include a Children's Minister in its cabinet. The recommendation forms part of a joint manifesto, launched at an event in the Senedd.
Providing a seat at the cabinet table for a senior minister with direct responsibility for children would provide the leadership and co-ordination required to ensure children's needs are better met. And it would help to build on the work undertaken by the National Assembly in the 17 years since devolution.
This would give a voice to all young people in Wales at the very heart of government. Instead of responsibility spread across a number of portfolios, a dedicated spokesperson would deal with all issues facing our children directly.
It's an approach that we – along with the 5 other leading children's charities in Wales – would welcome wholeheartedly.
