Best training kit for marathon runners What you need to get you building up those miles

Woman running outsideThere's only 9 weeks left to go until race day. If you don't already have the right kit, then now is the perfect time to make sure that you've got what you need.

It can be difficult to know what the right kit to wear is, when you're training in all kinds of weather, at different times of the day and possibly on different terrains.

But don't worry, we have some helpful tips from RG Active to help you know what to wear when you're clocking up those miles!

What essential items do I need?

    • Jackets
Essential for battling the elements. Go for something with high visibility so that road users can see you at all times. Choose something light and quick-drying, so you’re not carrying any additional weight during your run. Extra features such as storage for your phone, iPod and snacks are all particularly useful too.

    • Climacool tops
Sports manufacturers produce top-quality garments to maximise your running performance. Standard issue fabrics store water, weigh you down and – crucially – slow you down. All the main sports suppliers produce a running-specific climacool range which tackles excess sweat and improves ventilation.

    • Socks
Protect your feet at all times. As you clock up the miles, the risk of blisters and sores increases dramatically. You can prevent them by buying specialist climacool running socks.

    • Gloves
When you’re running in the cold and the wet, with the wind howling in your face, your extremities take a battering. Cold hands can affect your concentration and your technique could suffer as a result. Stay away from the thick woolly options and go for the runner-specific options instead which are lightweight and quick-drying.

    • Nipple tape and Vaseline
It’s time to talk chafing, a runner’s worst nightmare. It’s deeply unpleasant but soreness around your nipples, your groin and your armpits are a fact of life for marathon runners. Spare yourself the pain and the embarrassment by buying some nipple tape and placing some Vaseline in those hard-to-reach areas. It feels weird the first time you do it, but it’s definitely worth it!
