The new year is already here and for all our lovely runners the Virgin Money Marathon is looming on the horizon.

But don’t worry – whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned runner, we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Over the next 16 weeks we’ll be sharing tips, advice and guides from our friends at RG Active.

Each and every week we’ll give you all the tips and advice you need to get in great shape for one of the the most famous races in the world.

Week by week you’re going to get fitter and stronger. Month by month you’ll see your stamina improve and your confidence grow. By the time you get to the start line, you’ll be itching to get going.

What’s the most important thing you need?

    • the perfect pair of running shoes?
    • the latest selection of all-weather training kit?
    • a healthy supply of electrolyte drinks?

None of the above. The most important thing you need this week is patience.

Don’t rush. Doing too much too quickly will almost certainly backfire and worse, you could risk injuring yourself.

Start slow and steady

Follow RG Active's training plan to get you started:

    • Run 3 times this week, doing 2 short 30 minute runs during the week and a longer 45 minute run at the weekend.

If you can’t run for this time continuously, then use the fartlek principle - this means running fast for a period of time intermixed with periods of slower running to help you.

So, for instance, run for 4 minutes at a steady pace, then walk for 1 minute. You’ll find that your stamina increases rapidly and those short periods of recuperation will allow you to run further than you believed you could.
