Understand the legal requirements chaperones have towards keeping children safe in entertainment

Are you a chaperone in the entertainment industry and want to better understand your role in protecting children and young people from abuse or harm?

Do you work in the professional or amateur entertainment industries and want to know more about the legal requirements that chaperones are required to follow?

As experts in safeguarding, the NSPCC has produced a 60-minute elearning course, in association with the National Network for Children in Employment and Entertainment (NNCEE) and the BBC, covering the key statutory guidance that chaperones in the entertainment industry need to know.

What will I learn?

Children see the world through their incredible imaginations. This is especially true when they are taking part in an exciting activity, such as acting in a theatre production or being involved in a TV programme. But these exciting activities can be risky to children if they are not properly protected.

By the end of the course you will:

  • know the laws in each nation that underpin your responsibilities
  • understand how to recognise possible areas of concern
  • know how to respond to these concerns in the appropriate way
  • understand how to report any child protection concerns to those that are responsible for taking action
  • understand how to make a record of what you have seen and heard.

“Addressed the 'how' as well as the 'what' to raise. Helpful indicators around what language and tone to use to demonstrate respect for the creative environment while asserting clear boundaries.”

Volunteer chaperone

“Reminds you of the legal requirements and to ensure that these are enforced. Gives chaperones the confidence to stand up for a child if needed with the facts.”
