Training and support for you
As a helpline volunteer you'll play a crucial role in empowering children, so we make sure you receive the best training possible.
You'll take part in a face-to-face training programme tailored to your chosen volunteer role. In addition, all volunteers will receive training that covers Childline counselling situations.
Training is spread out to fit your schedule – running on evenings and weekends. You can learn more about this during your interview or by speaking to your supervisor.

During your training, you'll observe an experienced counsellor on shift – so you can familiarise yourself with the counselling room environment and see first-hand how you might engage with a caller.
Your first two shifts will form part of the training programme. There's no need to be too nervous, as experienced staff will be on hand to coach and support you the whole time.
You'll be assigned a supervisor for the entire time you're volunteering for the Childline helpline. They'll be on hand to offer feedback on your performance and support your development in the role.
Before and after every shift you will attend an informal briefing with other volunteers. This is a chance for you to share things you've learned. Taking time to speak with other volunteers about your experiences means you have a continuous network of support.
There's also an online volunteer network where you're able to communicate with other staff or volunteers from across the Childline services.
