British Olympian pledges support for the NSPCC
British diver and Beijing Olympic qualifier, 13-year-old Tom Daley, has pledged his support for the NSPCC and its service ChildLine, the UK's free, 24-hour helpline for children in distress or danger.
Daley, who recently became the second youngest person ever to qualify for the British Olympic team who will represent Britain at the Beijing Olympics, started diving at the age of eight and has since made a massive impact in national and international competitions.
Tom said: “When things get tough, you may feel that nobody understands. But you don’t have to be sad and suffer in silence. There is always someone who will listen to your problems and help you. Sometimes, when you’re feeling down and lonely it is hard to believe that your dreams will come true – but they can”.
Tom’s support follows on from a school project last year where he and his classmates each designed an NSPCC poster to help raise awareness of child cruelty.
Dame Mary Marsh, NSPCC Chief Executive said: “Tom is a positive role model and inspiration to many young people. As a 13-year old he understands the difficulties children and young people face when growing up. Around 18 months ago, Tom was bullied, but he was able to talk about the problem with his friends and family – sadly that is not the case for 2,500 children who speak to ChildLine counsellors every day”.
