Applying anti-racist and anti-discriminatory practice and strength-based approaches in safeguarding and child protection

How confident are you when engaging with children and families from backgrounds other than your own?

Ethnicity and race are important factors in the lived experience of children from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic communities who may experience racism, bias, stereotyping or cultural misunderstanding. This can have a negative impact on safeguarding and child protection - including children and young people facing barriers to accessing help and support or experiencing unconscious bias from agencies and professionals.

But what exactly does anti-racist practice mean? And how can professionals working to safeguard and protect minoritised ethnic children apply this practice to their work?

What will I learn?

This training course will enable participants to develop an awareness of anti-racist practice and relate this to safeguarding children from Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic communities.

Using a variety of learning methods, including self-reflection, the training covers:

  • awareness of anti-racist practice and key terminology
  • how attitudes, experiences and beliefs may impact on work with Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic children
  • applying an anti-racist practice framework for change at an individual, group and organisational level
  • current anti-discriminatory legislation and how this relates to race and ethnic inequality, child protection risks and racial trauma
  • using a critical cultural competency model and strength-based approach for engaging with children, young people and families
  • steps to applying anti-racist practice to your work.

So good as well to hear other perspectives and others' reflections to help your own learning."
