Our Executive Board
Our Executive Board is made up of members who put the long term plans agreed by our Board of Trustees into action.
We’re often asked about the salaries our Executive Board are paid. Our rates of pay are set by our Trustees in line with equivalent-sized UK charities and guidelines set out by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). They’re designed to attract the top people with the greatest experience in fundraising and running large voluntary sector organisations.
We want the people in charge of the money you raise to be the very best in the business, to give us the greatest chance of helping as many children as we can, as quickly as we can.
Our Executive Board
Peter joined as Chief Executive in 2013, after running the Big Lottery Fund for 5 years. Before this he worked as a Director at the Department of Education. As Chief Executive, Peter is advancing the NSPCC’s vision to end cruelty to children in the UK.
Director of Children's Services
Sherry joined the charity in 2014, with over 24 years’ experience leading and managing a diverse portfolio in public, voluntary and commercial settings. Under her leadership we’ve developed, tested and evaluated innovative services across the country and scaled up those proven to be effective.
Director of Corporate Services
David is responsible for the Finance, Information Systems, Property, Risk, Internal Audit, Data Protection and Legal functions. Before coming to the NSPCC, David worked at Tyco Fire & Security as the Chief Financial Officer for EMEA.
Director of Communications & Marketing
Before joining the NSPCC in June 2020, David led communications and marketing at Scouts and was Head of Public Relations and Engagement at Action for Children. He is also a winner of the PR Director of the Year award and a Chartered Fellow of the CIPR.
Director of National Services
Claire joined the NSPCC in 2003 following a career in hotel and finance management. She has become a lead on the continuous improvement of services, many of the NSPCC’s commercial offers and driving value for money.
Director of Fundraising and Engagement
With over 17 years’ experience in voluntary sector fundraising, Jo has worked in Executive and Non-Executive roles in both public and private sector healthcare. Jo is focused on ensuring the supporter is at the heart of everything we do.
Director of People
Brett joined the NSPCC in January 2018, with 20 years in senior strategic and operational HR roles. Passionate about people and volunteering, he hopes to help create a workforce of active, authentic ambassadors who inspire and compel others to play their part in our vision.

The role of our trustees
Our Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall control and direction of the NSPCC.
All of our trustees give their time on a voluntary basis and receive no pay or any other benefits. They're recruited through a variety of means, including open advertising. We place particular emphasis on ensuring that we have the appropriate balance of skills and experience we need. You can find out more about the role of trustees in our annual report (PDF).
Trustee since 2015. Member of the Policy Committee. Chair of the Board of Trustees since October 2019.
Member of the Finance Committee, Nominations and Governance Committee, and the Remuneration Committee.
Neil has supported the NSPCC for over 15 years including seven as a Trustee. He returned as a Trustee and Chair elect in October 2018 and appointed as Chair in October 2019. He is also chairman of the Guardian Media Group. His career spans a range of sectors and geographies in both the consumer and enterprise facing businesses with an emphasis on managing significant change. He was Chief Executive of the NASDAQ listed Virgin Media where he oversaw the successful turnaround of the UK cable company. He then led the sale of the company to Liberty Global in June 2013.
Neil has also served on the boards of the Sage Group PLC, the Bank of Queensland and Virgin Unite along with many subsidiaries of the companies he worked for during his executive career. His previous roles included senior positions at Lloyds Banking Group, Prudential Assurance, St George Bank in Australia, Citibank, East West Airlines and ICL Australia.

James is a Managing Director of Julius Baer International, a global wealth management business. James previously worked with Barclays and Merrill Lynch both in London and Manchester, and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities & Investment.
James became a volunteer with the NSPCC in the '90s, and went on to chair the first Business Board in Manchester. Prior to assuming the Trustee role, James was a Divisional Vice President with a particular focus on the links between the Society and the business community. He is an Honorary Member of Council.

Jo Begent works as a paediatrician with the multidisciplinary team looking after children and young people who have experienced sexual assault at the Lighthouse. Jo studied medicine at Oxford and St Mary's before training as a paediatrician at several London hospitals including the Royal London and Great Ormond Street where she did two years research into children with cancer.
Since becoming a consultant paediatrician at University College, London Hospital in 2007 Jo has been the lead paediatrician for child protection and developed a special interest in child safeguarding. As well as providing acute paediatric care, her clinical work focuses on teenagers, dealing particularly with young people with medically unexplained symptoms. She thrives on working in a multidisciplinary team and in her safeguarding role has participated in numerous multi professional meetings and peer reviews. She sits on the local safeguarding children's board.
Through her role as governor of the GOSH / UCLH hospital school, Jo has become passionate about the value of education in health and safeguarding.

Trustee Volunteer Link for the Yorkshire, The Humber and North-East. Member of the Income Generation and Volunteer Engagement Committees.
Liz has been involved in fundraising for the NSPCC for over 30 years, initially as a district member on the Retford (North Nottinghamshire) fundraising committee, before becoming Chair 28 years ago. She has held the position of North Nottinghamshire Branch Chair for the last 16 years. In 2011, Liz joined Central Task Force as the East Midlands representative, allowing her to liaise with the volunteer network and better understand the longer-term strategy of the society.
Liz feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend time at home supporting her family as they grew up. During this period, Liz helped the NSPCC raise funds and built relationships with local businesses to gain their support.
Liz also contributes to her local community as a school governor allowing her to have regular contact with young children and their parents. This has seen her involved in finance, strategic planning and policy in the school.

Chair of the Income Generation Committee.
Andy has been a staunch NSPCC supporter for over ten years and is the Chair of our Income Generation Committee. He is group chief executive of Phoenix Group PLC with over 30 years’ operational and executive experience in the insurance industry across life assurance and general insurance. He also has extensive knowledge of the UK regulated environment combined with experience in capital and risk management. Andy is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

Pippa Gough MA, MSc, PGCEA, RN, RM, HV, FQNI, FRSA, Trustee
Trustee. Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees. Chair of the Policy Committee.
Pippa has a varied career as a nurse, health visitor, senior manager and development consultant in both the public and voluntary sectors at local and national levels. She was Director of Policy at the Royal College of Nursing and latterly Senior Fellow at the King’s Fund in both the Policy and Leadership Development Directorates.
She has experience of being an elected Trustee in a leading charity, the Alzheimer’s Society, for 6 years (two terms of office) from 2011-2017. For the last two years of office Pippa held the position of Vice Chair.
In her work as a Health Visitor, Pippa’s practice was mainly with families in adversity and where child protection was a major concern.
Pippa is an experienced coach, both with individuals and teams. She is also experienced in designing, commissioning and delivering innovative leadership and organisational development programmes within the health service and other parts of the public sector.
She is the author and editor of a number of books on nursing and policy and numerous articles and other publications on leadership, change, development and health workforce.
In her personal life, Pippa is married and lives in London and Herne Bay where she and her husband are restoring a Georgian house by the sea. She is also an award winning fiction writer and has had short stories published by both Virago and Fish Publications.

Member of the Audit and Risk Committee
Clem was formerly the Chief Operating Officer at The National Archives, recently moving to be Executive Director Finance and Operations at the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Clem has been a co-opted member of the NSPCC's Audit & Risk Committee for almost 5 years. In addition to fulfilling this role, he has also provided extensive advice on a range of issues.

Member of the Policy Committee
Tanya is a Professor in the Public Understanding of Science and a consultant clinical psychologist with 30 years' experience specialising in working with children and adolescents. She is also a journalist author and broadcaster. Tanya is an independent national and international government advisor on children, young people and digital media. Her TV presenting and on-screen credits include the BBC series House of Tiny Tearaways, Child of our Time, The Truth About Child Sex Abuse, as well as Bedtime Live for Channel 4. Tanya also writes a weekly column for the Times.

Fiona became a volunteer with NSPCC in 1984 when she was asked to help with a flag day and has been closely involved with the Society ever since. She formed a new district committee in her village in 1991 and went on to chair the Cardiff branch from 1995-2013. She was volunteer chairman of Central Task Force from 2006-2012.
In addition to her various roles within NSPCC she was a school governor for 22 years and has 4 very lively grandchildren to keep her busy and remind her that childhood is very important and precious.

Andrew joined the City of Edinburgh Council as Chief Executive Officer in July 2015. He began his local government career with Falkirk District Council. His 35-year public sector career has since included a career in leisure where he became the Director of Leisure and Culture at Birmingham City Council and President of The Institute of Leisure Management and he has been CEO at four major local authorities in North Tyneside, Wiltshire, Cornwall and his dream job in Edinburgh.
He has delivered a £900m joint venture in waste management and has led transformation programmes in his last four authorities worth more that £200m. Andrew led the UKs first rural devolution deal in Cornwall worth £1.8bn and has now delivered the successful Edinburgh and South-East Scotland City Deal worth £1.2bn.
He is now leading a £147m Transformation Programme for the council and is at the heart of Edinburgh’s Launch of its City Vision initiative 2050.
Andrew is also a medal winning 400m runner and represented Great Britain and Scotland at international level.

Tarek has been a passionate supporter and patron of the NSPCC since 2006, joining and then chairing the Rebuilding Childhoods Board as well as the National Volunteer Board. He is co-founder and Group CEO at Crossbridge Capital, a leading wealth management advisory firm. As Group CEO, and from offices in London, Singapore, Monaco and Malta, Tarek leads the businesses that serve the needs of high net worth families and entrepreneurs in Emerging Markets. Prior to launching Crossbridge Capital, he was a Managing Director at Credit Suisse and a Vice-President at JP Morgan. Tarek has also worked for several leading media companies, including CNN and Fox TV.
Tarek received his BA degree in Economics from Georgetown University and his MBA degree from Harvard Business School.

Lady McLaughlin CBE is a qualified social worker. She is a former Director of Ulster Bank and was Pro Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast for nine years. She served on the Departmental Board of the Northern Ireland Office, was Chair of the Civil Service Commissioners for Northern Ireland and also a member of the Public Services Commission.
Her background has been predominantly within the Health Service in Northern Ireland, having served as Vice Chair of the Eastern HSS Board and Chair of S&E Belfast HSS Trust.
She recently retired as Vice Chair of the Board of the Ulster Orchestra Society and is a former Board member of Business in the Community, the BBC NI Broadcasting Council, Action Cancer and NI Chest Heart and Stroke. In 2008 she received an Honorary Doctorate (LLD) from Queen’s University Belfast.

Derrick has been a volunteer for the NSPCC's Schools Service since 2013, delivering assemblies and workshops across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Bedfordshire. He is involved in recruiting, training and supporting new volunteers, a role he particularly enjoys. He has also been a Sessional Volunteer Co-ordinator with the NSPCC, supporting the Area Co-ordinator in the administrative work associated with school bookings and ordering resources.
Derrick worked in the local NHS for over 20 years and was involved in planning, commissioning and ensuring the delivery of services in both rural and urban settings. This included acute and community-based services for children, minority ethnic communities and 'hard-to-reach' groups.

Sarah is a fully qualified teacher and has worked in senior roles in the Education sector for over 25 years. As a Head of Student Services and Assistant Principal in an inner city Sixth Form College she was responsible for students’ pastoral care and progression. As an Operational Director for a national charity she led a consortium of public and private sector partners to deliver large scale, complex, multi million pound Government education and teacher training contracts.
Sarah currently works as a founding Director of a software development business specialising in educational management and appraisal systems. Volunteering as an NSPCC Childline Counsellor for eight years with a regular evening shift at the Nottingham base has reinforced a belief in the need for and importance of the NSPCC as a vital service, support and a voice for all children facing adversity and abuse.

A portfolio director, investor and adviser, focused in technology, media and the arts. Tom is a founder investor and Chair of three start-ups, Tagsmart, Fusebox Games and TVbeat. He has worked in the media and entertainment industry since 1983, spending the first 18 years within advertising sales at ITV, Eurosport and Emap. He made the transition into TV and film programme distribution in 2001 leading Disney’s European business. In 2009 he was appointed Chief Commercial Officer of Endemol Worldwide. He was Head of Partnerships EMEA for Yahoo and prior to that, CEO of Mecom Group. In July 2018 he was appointed as an External Director to the Executive Board of the Performing Rights Society.
Tom is also Chairman and Founder of the Childline Board and a member of the charity's National Volunteer Board. The Childline Board has raised over £13m since it was founded in 2005. Tom’s wife Helen is a volunteer Childline Counsellor. He was awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2015 for services to Children. In 2016 he was appointed Visiting Professor at London South Bank University and in 2017 awarded an Honorary Fellowship from London South Bank University.
Tom is a public speaker, sharing his work/life experiences and encouraging young people to explore careers in the world of media and entertainment. He supports Speakers for Schools & LSBU.

John has supported the NSPCC in a fundraising capacity since 2003 and has been a co-opted member of our Finance Sub Committee since 2008. He has held a number of senior financial roles within the banking and insurance sectors, including Chief Financial Officer of four publicly listed financial services companies.
He was previously Group Financial Controller of Barclays PLC, a Partner at Ernst & Young LLP and has worked in senior roles at Prudential plc, Barclays Capital and PwC. He is currently the CFO of Hastings Group Holdings plc.
