How to write family Christmas stories

Get some inspiration from Christmas books, write your story, then create a book, poster or play.

Winter is full of inspiration for budding writers, from frosty mornings and hibernating animals to Santa and his sleigh. By spending time together as a family creating Christmas stories, you'll be encouraging your children's storytelling skills. Write your own tale, or how about working together on the same story?

Find a book to inspire your family Christmas stories

The NSPCC Christmas shop has lots of festive children's books choose from. So why not browse and find something you'll all like? We've picked six books that might spark an idea for a character, plot or theme in your Christmas story.

1. The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher. The Christmasaurus wants more than anything to be able to fly, and help pull Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve. Flying turns out to be harder than he thought, but he meets a dinosaur-obsessed boy who teaches him the magic of believing.

2. Peppa Pig: Peppa's Christmas Unicorn. It's Christmas Eve, and Peppa and her family are off to a Christmas fair. There's yummy food, fun games, and a carousel with a magical Christmas unicorn! But what other Christmas magic is in store for Peppa?

3. Mr Men Little Miss The Christmas Contest by Roger Hargreaves. The Mr Men and Little Miss are having a festive contest to find the best decorated Christmas house! Who will be the winner this year?

4. The Snowflake by Benji Davies. Exquisitely told and beautifully illustrated, The Snowflake tells the tale of one snowflake and one little girl – both longing for something and looking for their own special place in the world.

5. Snow Still by Holly SurpliceA little fawn wakes up to discover that the world outside has changed after a fall of snow. This beautifully illustrated book is perfect for snuggling up with on cold winter days.

6. The Robin and the Reindeer by Rosa Bailey and Carmen Saldana. Little Reindeer is lost in the forest. It begins to snow. And as the snowflakes crowd through the trees, she catches a glimpse of something. A robin! The bird lends the red from his feathers to Little Reindeer's nose, and they fly home together.

Or how about turning it into a Christmas play? You could put on a show just for family, or organise a performance for a wider group, ask for donations, and raise money for us?
