5 indoor Christmas games and activities for kids and families

When it's chilly or raining outside, there's still plenty to keep the family entertained inside. Get cosy this Christmas and try out some of these fun indoor games and activities.

The Christmas holidays are the perfect time to step aside from work and worries, put down your devices and spend time with loved ones on some fun and creative games.

We've put together some great in-person, hands-on activities that everyone can join in on. From family games to creative activities, there's something here for everyone.

1) Play a Christmas memory or dice game

Sometimes the simplest games are the best.

Our Christmas tree memory game involves memorising objects on a tray then guessing which have been removed. And our dice game gets the whole family up on their feet singing and dancing together.

They can both be played by the whole family, including children aged 4 and over.

There's more on our Christmas games page, including an activity sheet to download.

Two more fun games you can play

You might remember some other family games from your childhood that don’t come in boxes, like Who am I? and Charades. Both are ideal for the whole family to join in, and only require willing and enthusiastic participants. Here’s a reminder of how they work.

To play Who am I? all you need is a pen and some post-it notes.

  1. Each player secretly writes down the name of a person on the note and make sure nobody else sees. It could be someone famous from the past or present, a cartoon figure, a family member, pet, or other animal. But make sure that the characters are age and group appropriate. You don’t want everyone to give up before the end.
  2. Now stick a post-it note on the back of each player.
  3. Each person can ask about 20 ‘yes or no’ questions to find out who they are. They cannot ask any other type of question. Think of questions like ‘am I a man?’, ‘am I a cartoon?’, ‘am I alive?’.
  4. Each player should walk around the room asking questions, rather than just quizzing one person.
  5. Depending on the age of the players, you might want to drop a hint or two – especially if nobody’s guessed the answer after 20 questions.

This is a great game for kids and adults alike. It’s sure to wake everyone up and get brains and bodies buzzing!

Pick a player to start the game. They will then come up with a title of a book, film, song, familiar saying or famous person’s name. They then perform their chosen word or phrase in front of the other players, who try and guess the answer. This is done in silence using common clues like:

  1. The first step is to show what it is. For a book, pretend to read a book. For a song, pretend to sing. For a film, pretend to use an old movie camera.
  2. Next you need to show how many words it is by holding up the same number of fingers. If there are several words, hold up one finger for the first word before you perform it. Then repeat with the others.
  3. To show a word that rhymes with a word you’re performing, tug on your ear first to say ‘sounds like’.
  4. If someone almost guesses the answer, point to them, and give them another clue.

The first person to guess correctly gets a point. If there are enough people, you can even play as teams. To make things easier, you could choose a theme before you start like musicals, Disney films or sports stars.
